Indigenous Racial Identity and Self Esteem (IRISE) Project

This project aimed to explore the development of racial identity and related self-esteem of Aboriginal children, youth and adults across the life span.

It is the intention of this research to describe the mediating factors of racial identity and related self-esteem that influence Aboriginal people’s mental wellbeing. This project aims to strengthen the social, cultural and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal children aged 4-12 years, youth aged 13-17 and adults from 18 years onwards across three sites:

  1. Metropolitan
  2. Regional and
  3. Rural.

Over 400 participants were involved in the project. We now have developed the following instruments:

  • IRISE_YC for 4 to 7 year olds
  • IRISE_C for 8-12 year olds
  • IRISE_Y for 13 to 17 year olds
  • IRISE_A for 18+
  • PAPC for non-Aboriginal parents, carers and guardians of Aboriginal children and young people
